San Bernardino Culture: Art, Streetwear & the 909

San Bernardino is more than a city in the Inland Empire. It is a place shaped by different communities, different generations and different forms of self-expression. From street art and music to skateboarding, cars, fashion and independent artists, San Bernardino has its own character.

For Griselda Supply Co., that environment is part of where the brand comes from.

Born in San Bernardino, California, Griselda Supply Co. was created around the idea that art and streetwear can exist together. Clothing can be more than something you wear. A graphic can tell a story. A character can represent a feeling. A piece of clothing can carry a connection to a place, a memory or a culture.

GSC is rooted in the 909 and the Inland Empire, while being part of the larger creative culture of Southern California.

The Culture of San Bernardino

San Bernardino has a character that is difficult to separate from the people who live here. The city sits within the Inland Empire, but its identity is its own.

Culture can be found in many places: on a skateboard, on a painted wall, at a car meet, inside a recording studio, through photography, in local businesses and in the clothes people choose to wear.

For many people, streetwear becomes a way of communicating identity without having to say anything.

A graphic tee can represent where you are from. A hat can reference a neighborhood or a favorite artist. A jacket can become part of someone's personal style. Art can move from a canvas onto clothing and then into the streets.

That connection between art, identity and everyday life is one of the ideas behind Griselda Supply Co.

The 909 and the Inland Empire

The 909 is more than an area code. For many people, it has become a recognizable part of Inland Empire identity.

San Bernardino and the surrounding Inland Empire have their own combination of influences. Southern California's larger culture is present, but the Inland Empire has developed its own creative voices, styles and communities.

The 909 can represent being inland. It can represent growing up away from the traditional image of Los Angeles and coastal California. It can represent pride in where you come from and the individuality that comes with building your own identity.

That spirit is important to GSC.

Griselda Supply Co. isn't trying to imitate another city's streetwear culture. The goal is to create from our own perspective.

San Bernardino Streetwear

Streetwear has always been closely connected to self-expression.

For GSC, streetwear is a canvas.

Graphic design, illustration, photography, characters and different visual influences can all become part of a piece of clothing. The result doesn't have to fit neatly into one category.

It can be streetwear. It can be art. It can be something personal.

Our designs draw from the visual world around us while developing their own identity. Some pieces are bold. Some are darker. Some are playful. Some are influenced by nostalgia, graffiti, skate culture or the strange characters that exist inside the GSC universe.

The goal is not to create clothing that simply says where it came from.

The goal is to create clothing that feels like it came from somewhere.

Art in the Inland Empire

Art is an important part of Southern California, and the Inland Empire has its own creative communities and institutions that contribute to the region's cultural landscape.

San Bernardino is home to artists, photographers, musicians, designers, muralists and other creatives who contribute to that larger scene.

For GSC, art isn't something separate from the brand.

It is the foundation.

The GSC approach comes from treating clothing as another surface for artwork. Instead of creating a graphic simply because it looks good on a shirt, we want the artwork to have its own personality.

Characters can become symbols.

Logos can become icons.

A shirt can become part of a larger visual world.

That is where Griselda Supply Co. sits between art and streetwear.

Skateboarding, Cars and Street Culture

Street culture isn't one single thing.

In San Bernardino and throughout the Inland Empire, different communities overlap. Skateboarding, cars, music, photography, graffiti, fashion and art can all influence each other.

Someone might skate in the afternoon, photograph cars on the weekend and create artwork at night. Another person might express themselves through music, clothing or photography.

Those different interests are part of what makes street culture interesting.

GSC draws inspiration from that kind of environment.

We are interested in the things people create themselves. The things that don't necessarily come from a major company or a huge institution.

A hand-painted piece.

A custom car.

A local photograph.

A graphic on a wall.

A shirt someone designed themselves.

A character created in a bedroom or garage.

Those things can become part of a culture because people give them meaning.

Chicano Art and Southern California Identity

Southern California has a long history of Mexican American and Chicano artistic expression, and those visual influences can be seen throughout the region.

For GSC, those influences are part of a larger creative environment rather than a limitation on what the brand can become.

Our work can incorporate different visual references, generations and styles while remaining rooted in our own perspective.

The goal is to create something that feels familiar without simply repeating what has already been done.

That means taking inspiration from the environment around us and transforming it into something new.

Griselda Supply Co. and San Bernardino

Griselda Supply Co. was born in San Bernardino.

The name Griselda comes from the founder's mother, making the brand personal from the beginning.

GSC was built around art, streetwear and the idea that creative expression can help people transform the way they see themselves and the world around them.

Our identity is connected to San Bernardino, the 909 and the Inland Empire, but the goal isn't to create clothing exclusively for one place.

It is to create from that place.

There is a difference.

San Bernardino is part of the perspective behind GSC. The people, streets, artists, visual culture and experiences of Southern California can become raw material for creativity.

From there, the artwork can travel anywhere.

Gato GSC

One of the most recognizable parts of the GSC universe is Gato GSC.

Gato is more than a mascot.

The character represents another side of the brand's personality: mysterious, playful, melancholic and independent.

Gato exists inside the larger GSC world and gives the brand a character that can move between artwork, clothing, animation and storytelling.

That is another example of how GSC approaches streetwear differently.

A brand doesn't have to be just a logo.

It can become a world.

Pocos Pero Locos

"Pocos Pero Locos" is part of the attitude behind GSC.

Few, but crazy.

It represents individuality, creativity and the idea that you don't need to follow everyone else to have an identity.

That mentality fits naturally with independent streetwear.

GSC isn't about trying to make everyone dress the same.

It is about creating artwork and clothing for people who want something that feels personal.

San Bernardino, the 909 and Beyond

The Inland Empire is part of Southern California, but it has its own voice.

San Bernardino is part of that story.

For GSC, being connected to San Bernardino doesn't mean putting the city into every design simply for the sake of using its name.

It means allowing the environment to influence the work.

The colors.

The streets.

The people.

The art.

The cars.

The music.

The memories.

The strange moments.

The everyday moments.

All of those things can become inspiration.

That is what we mean when we say art and streetwear collide.
